Eating in Barcelona: Tapas, Paella, Tapas, Cocoalat, and more Tapas

Eating in Barcelona was definitely an adventure – here are some of the highlights of the eating adventures that went on in this Spanish city. The total cost of the meal was included to indicate how much the four of us girls spent together, unless otherwise indicated.

First meal in Barcelona was right by the AirBnB that we were staying. It’s a small little bar and restaurant – very friendly staff who speaks English. Perfect start to our tapas adventures. What we ordered: patatas bravas, calamares a la romana, chistorra, pan cote tomate, and individual drinks. Total cost of meal: 22.05 ( Links: Yelp / Website )

Perhaps one of my favourite places to eat was here at Barraca. Located right by the beaches of the Barceloneta area, you can grab a seat at a table right by the windows for a gorgeous ocean view as you enjoy your meal. What we ordered: clams, mussels and cockles with sauteed chili and garlic, Grandma’s cod fritters, and paella with chicken, pork chop, beans, clams, squid, artichokes and sausage. Total cost of meal: 78.80 ( Links: Website / Yelp )

Cafe Granja Viader

Established in 1873, this cafe is still run by its founding family – now in its fifth generation. Their claim is that they invented cocoalat – the delicious chocolate-and-skimmed-milk drink. Then there’s the hot chocolate. Dark, rich, creamy, almost like pudding. Definitely not how my mom and Tim Hortons makes it. What we ordered: three cocoalats with whipped cream, one hot dark chocolate, and lady fingers. Total cost of meal: €15.50 ( Links: Website / Yelp )

Ambos Mundos

One of many restaurants that surround Placa Reial, we decided to enjoy a dinner here. I loved the atmosphere of the square in general and quite enjoyed this meal. What we ordered: 1L of sangria, eggplants, button mushrooms, spiced meatballs, Galician octopus, paella, and pepperoni pizza. Total cost of the meal: 62.80 ( Links: Website / Yelp )

El Quim

In the chaotic excitement of Mercat de la Boqueria is this tapas bar. We decided to visit here for lunch and quite enjoyed the meal. It’s quite popular – and no take out – so you need to wait behind the chairs at the bar and move in quick. What we ordered: grilled salmon (Christina and Michelle’s favourite), dumplings, and the house special – fried eggs with baby squid, and individual drinks. Total cost of meal: 55 ( Links: Website / Yelp )

Estel de Gracia

Restaurant near our AirBnB – much better than we expected for an impromptu late-night dinner. It had a very retro and classic interior – with interesting and delicious dishes to try. What we ordered: montadito de salmon con mascarpone a la mostaza antigua, calamares a la andaluza, tostaditas de guacamole picante y rucula, choricitos a la sidra, and mini hamburgecsas de ternera con parmesano y crema de trufa. Total cost of meal: 29.15 ( Links: Website / Yelp )
